LOCAL CONTEXT
What's different about asphalt work in Moonah
Moonah is a densely settled suburb immediately north of the CBD, with a mix of post-war fibro housing, 1960s brick veneer homes and a busy commercial strip along Main Road. Lots here are generally smaller than outer suburbs, and a number of properties have converted their front yards to hardstand, which is where we see a lot of the driveway and carparking work.
Glenorchy City Council covers Moonah. Crossover applications go to Glenorchy, and council drainage requirements are worth understanding up front: Moonah's street drainage system is older in some sections, and council may require that a new driveway crossover includes a kerb drainage detail to prevent sheet flow from the property onto the footpath.
Many Moonah driveways that were laid in the 1980s and 1990s are now showing edge failure and surface cracking from years of clay subgrade movement under the bitumen. A top-coat overlay on top of a failing base looks right for a season then cracks again. We will tell you honestly at the site visit whether a full strip-and-relay is the right answer, even when an overlay would be cheaper upfront.
MOONAH FAQ
Questions from Moonah customers
My Moonah driveway has cracks along the edges, can you just overlay it?+
Edge cracking almost always indicates base movement, not just surface wear. If the overlay goes down on top of a moving base, the cracks reflect through within a year or two. We assess the base condition on site and tell you straight whether an overlay will last or whether a strip-and-relay is the call.
Can I convert my front yard to a hardstand carpark in Moonah?+
Yes, subject to a Glenorchy City Council planning assessment. Front-yard hardstand conversions in Moonah need to meet the council's impervious surface rules and may require stormwater management treatment. We do the asphalt work; the planning permit is between you and council, though we can advise on the process.
Does the crossover application require drainage works in Moonah?+
Sometimes. Older sections of Moonah have street drainage that isn't designed for increased impervious surface runoff. Council may require a kerb drainage detail on the crossover design. We include this in the plan if Glenorchy require it, no extra surprises after the permit.
Can you do small commercial jobs in Moonah's Main Road strip?+
Yes. We've done pothole repairs, footpath reinstatements and small carpark overlays along the Moonah commercial strip. Early-morning starts where needed to avoid peak trading hours. Quote covers the scheduling.
