Trench Reinstatement Hobart

Trench Reinstatement work in progress in Hobart, southern Tasmania

Every time a telco, NBN, water, gas or stormwater contractor cuts a trench through a sealed road or driveway, someone has to put it back properly. Most utility crews reinstate their own trenches, and most reinstatements are done too quickly.

We handle trench reinstatement for utility contractors, councils, and private property owners across Hobart, Glenorchy, Clarence and Kingborough. The standard we work to: flush with the surrounding surface, edge-sealed, compacted in lifts, documented.

A reinstatement done right looks like the trench was never there inside 12 months. A poor one sinks, edges crack, and the utility contractor gets a return-to-site defect notice.

Why it matters

  • Compliant with City of Hobart, Glenorchy City Council, Clarence City Council, and Kingborough Council reinstatement specs
  • Flush finish means no lip for cyclists or pedestrians to catch a wheel or foot on
  • Lift-by-lift compaction prevents the sinking that makes every utility contractor look bad 6 months later
  • Most reinstatements completed within 48 hours of trench backfill being ready
  • Full photographic documentation provided for council defect prevention

THE PROCESS

How we do it

01

Coordinate with the trench crew

Confirm the trench is backfilled and compacted to subgrade level before we arrive. We coordinate directly with the site supervisor.

02

Saw-cut clean edges

Square the trench perimeter with a concrete saw so the new asphalt bonds to defined straight edges, not a rough break.

03

Tack coat the walls

Bitumen emulsion applied to the cut vertical edges to bond new asphalt to old.

04

Lay in lifts for deep trenches

Trenches deeper than 75mm are filled in 50–75mm compacted lifts. No bulk-pour shortcuts.

05

Compact and finish flush

Vibratory plate or roller compaction. Final check with a straight-edge to confirm flush with surrounding surface.

06

Document and sign off

Photographs of pre-lay sub-base condition plus a sign-off record for the utility contractor or council authority.

COMPARISON

How it stacks up

When a sealed surface has been cut for a utility trench, there are three reinstatement options with different cost and durability trade-offs.

AFTERCARE

After the trench is reinstated

A properly reinstated trench behaves identically to the road around it. A few things worth watching in the first year.

First month

Watch for any settlement at the joint between new and old asphalt. Up to 5mm of dip in the first few weeks is normal compression. More than that and we'll come back to top it up under our guarantee.

First 6 months

The new asphalt will stand out as darker than the surrounding pavement. It weathers progressively over 6–12 months. If the visual difference bothers the client or council, a light skim coat over the whole area blends it quickly.

Edge cracks at the joint

If a crack opens up between new and old at the saw-cut joint, seal it before Hobart's wet winters drive water into the sub-base. A crack-seal at the joint costs a fraction of re-doing the reinstatement.

12-month council inspection

City of Hobart requires a 12-month inspection for road-reserve reinstatements. We provide the original staged photos of build compliance to the responsible party, keep that file on hand when the inspection notice arrives.

Documentation retention

We provide photographs of the sub-base condition taken before the asphalt goes in. Keep that file, utility companies face compliance audits where evidence of proper reinstatement is required, and the photographic record we provide is what stands up to scrutiny.

FAQ

Trench Reinstatement, common questions

How quickly can you reinstate after the trench is backfilled?+

Standard turnaround is within 48 hours of the backfill being ready. Emergency same-day reinstatement is possible for an extra fee, give us a call and we'll work out what's achievable. Hot mix availability across the Hobart region is rarely the constraint.

Will you be able to see where the trench was?+

Initially yes, new asphalt is a lot darker than aged pavement. Over 6–12 months of weathering the new surface fades into the surrounding road. If visual match matters from the start, a skim coat over the whole area sorts it.

Do you reinstate footpath trenches?+

Yes, footpath trenches in asphalt or concrete finish to match the existing surface. Gravel road trenches are a different trade, we don't do those.

Can you come in before the council inspection?+

Yes, that's the normal sequence. We reinstate, photograph the pre-asphalt sub-base, provide the documentation, and the council inspector comes through after. Most Hobart-area councils require that photographic record.

What's the warranty on a reinstatement?+

Every reinstatement carries our workmanship guarantee, no settlement, no edge failure. If the trench drops or an edge fails inside 12 months, we come back and fix it.

What happens if the backfill isn't properly compacted when we arrive?+

We check the sub-base condition before laying asphalt. If the backfill has settled or wasn't compacted to standard, we'll need additional preparation before we can lay. That's scoped and quoted on the day, we won't asphalt over a weak base and let it fail six months later.

Can you handle long trench runs for major utility upgrades?+

Yes. For larger-scale utility upgrade projects with trench runs of 50–200m or more, we mobilise accordingly and can coordinate closely with the primary contractor's programme. Project pricing applies for anything over 50 linear metres, speak to us early in the project timeline so we can hold dates.

Which councils in the Hobart area have the most specific reinstatement requirements?+

City of Hobart requires photographic documentation of the sub-base prior to asphalt lay and a post-completion inspection at 12 months for road-reserve trenches. Glenorchy City Council and Clarence City Council follow broadly similar documentation standards. Kingborough Council requirements vary by road classification.

What happens if the trench is cut in concrete rather than asphalt?+

We form the reinstatement to match the existing surface material. A concrete footpath trench gets a concrete pour to match; an asphalt road trench gets hot-mix. If the client wants to upgrade the reinstatement to asphalt on an old concrete path, we'll do that, but it's a design decision that affects the overall visual of the finished surface and needs to be discussed upfront.

Do you reinstate NBN and telco conduit trenches?+

Yes. NBN and telco sub-contractors cut thousands of trenches across the Hobart area every year for pit-and-conduit installs. We work directly with these contractors for same-week reinstatement. The conduit crew installs and backfills, we come in and lay the asphalt top. Most residential telco trenches are short, under 3m, and run at a minimum job rate.
